Randy Harrison plays Nagg, often forced to listen to the meanderings of Hamm, promised a sugar plum in return, only to have that promise broken. Perhaps Beckett the playwright is getting even for some of the broken promises of his own childhood.

Harrison starred as Lucky in BTF’s previous Unicorn Theatre production of “Godot” and nearly stole the show.
His character doesn’t offer him that opportunity here, but he is again strong, exhibiting a clear understanding of Beckett’s rhythms and inflections. And, as with Lucky, the heart of his portrayal is a longish story that goes nowhere in many different directions at once.

Opening this week in the Unicorn is Samuel Beckett’s tragicomic investigation of existential immobility, Endgame. During my visit, it was rehearsing on the company’s Lavan Campus, a former private school and summer camp up the road from the main campus.

Read MoreIt was very early in the morning as Randy Harrison arrived with a cup of wake-up in his hand. Sitting down at a handy picnic table with him to talk about Endgame was an odd juxtaposition of realities. The Berkshire Theatre Festival (BTF) rehearsal facilities are located in the sun-dappled woods, a long way from the dark and claustrophobic setting of Endgame, the Samuel Beckett play he is in rehearsals for. It plays at the Unicorn Theatre from July 6-24, 2010. So sitting in the outdoors, birds a-twittering, with a young actor in the prime of his life seemed to be a parallel universe. Harrison’s world is one filled with great purpose and possibilities. Beckett’s is not.
Thinking about Beckett’s “Endgame” which starts July 6 at BTF
Read MoreSamuel Beckett and “Endgame” are the source of never ending discussion and speculation among theatre-goers, dramatists and intellectuals. His works belong to the theatre of the absurd. But that doesn’t stop fanatics like me from trying to figure it all out. Adapted from a March 11, 2009 Berkshire Fine Arts article I wrote. This earlier piece contrasts the works of Beckett as done over the years – especially at Amercan Repertory Theatre – with that done recently at the Berkshire Theatre Festival. Watch for the upcoming interview with Randy Harrison who plays Nagg and his take on Beckett.
